How Vehicle Finance Approval Works in South Africa
A simple guide to help you understand what banks look at before approving your car finance.
Buying a car is exciting, but many people only focus on the vehicle they want and forget the most important part: finance approval. In South Africa, banks do not approve vehicle finance only because you like the car. They look at your income, expenses, credit record and affordability.
1. The bank checks your income
The first thing the bank wants to know is whether you earn enough to afford the monthly instalment. This is why buyers are usually asked for payslips or bank statements.
2. Your expenses matter
Even if your salary looks good, the bank will also check your monthly expenses. Rent, loans, accounts, school fees, insurance, groceries and other debit orders all affect your affordability.
3. Credit record is very important
Banks look at how you pay your current and previous accounts. Missed payments, arrears, judgments or too many recent applications can reduce your chances of approval.
4. The vehicle must fit your affordability
Sometimes a client qualifies for finance, but not for the specific car they selected. In that case, a good salesperson will help match the client with a vehicle that fits their budget better.
5. Deposit can improve your chances
A deposit reduces the amount you need to finance. This may improve affordability and can sometimes help the bank view the deal more positively.
